We are thrilled to host expert guest speakers from Seatrees and Scripps Institution of Oceanography to discuss the critical state of our kelp forests and the restoration efforts that can secure the future of our beloved sport.
Date: Wednesday, October 1st Time: 7:30pm Location: Me & Eds Pizza, Lakewood, CA Why You Should Attend: · Kelp Forests Fuel Our Passion: These vibrant underwater ecosystems create the rich marine biodiversity that makes spearfishing along Southern California’s coast and islands so thrilling. From white seabass to yellowtail, the kelp forests are home to the species we cherish. · A Threatened Treasure: Kelp forests have declined by up to 80% in Southern California and 95% in Northern California over the past decade due to marine heatwaves, urchin overgrazing, and pollution. This loss impacts the marine life we depend on for spearfishing. · Restoration Brings Hope: Innovative efforts, like those led by Seatrees and Scripps, are making a difference. Scripps and Seatrees are doing research on kelp thermally tolerant kelp restoration, and studying the climate and biodiversity benefits of these vital habitats, with the goal of ensuring vibrant dive sites for years to come. · Learn from the Experts: Hear directly from Seatrees’ co-founder and Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists about cutting-edge kelp restoration science, ongoing projects in La Jolla and beyond, and how we as spearfishers can support these efforts to protect our playground. Don’t miss this chance to learn how we can help save our kelp forests and keep Southern California’s waters teeming with life! Whether you’re a seasoned diver or new to the sport, this meeting will inspire you to get involved and make a difference. Bring a friend, grab a seat, and let’s dive into the future of our oceans together! Check out the following links to learn more: The 2025 Fall Classic Tournament is set for Saturday, October 11th.
